Braids are out! And Im digging back In!
Hey Yall! Easy come easy go, I had to remove those braids asap! Only 2 weeks that has to be a record. I was so excited about my styling/detangling break but hair styles must be practical for me. If I feel hindered or bothered in any way It's over! Those braids were so THICK and long that I couldn't do anything with them. They were very nice down but I couldn't be productive wearing those down, and I couldn't put the braids up because they were so thick and night-time prep was a real Job! So chilllle good riddens!
Before going into braids I was beginning to make some bad decisions with my hair care out of sheer laziness. I was flat out tired of doing it, nor did I have the time. I've always believed in a nice break from one's self in these situations. I had begun talking hair cuts and locs and my hubby wouldn't agree to either!!! Thus my hasty braid up decision...
Now that my hair is out I feel its time to dig in and get back to my treatments and twist regimen. Lately my hair has been a little lack luster so can't slack now. I will keep you posted on some of my newer hair care treatments and Indian hair oils that I've found..so stay tuned!!! Lets keep it going ladies..

Summer Hair Care Plans..Do you have any?
| Braid out |
Hello ladies!! I am behind with posting this month..please forgive me! How have you been!? Well, if you are living in the Dallas Ft worth area you have noticed that it is already getting pretty hot outside. Its not officially summer but we are already feeling the effects of it here and that typically means a revamp of hair care needs for me. My hair is prone to dryness, and especially during the summer so wearing my hair out is very limited. The summer sun seems to just DRY my hair out and it feels like dessert sand!
| Textured Banana Clip Bun |
Simply wearing my hair in buns, updo's, and my signature twists isn't always enough during the summer. I have to completely cover my hair and especially during the hottest months. So I will be wearing braids. I also increase how much water and moisturizer I use as well as Grape seed oil to protect my hair from heat damage. Yes the sun gets that hot here! I feel its equivalent to sitting under a hooded dryer, no exaggeration.
My summer Hair Care Plan
I will spritz my hair with water and glycerin to attract more moisture from the air
Add Grape seed oil to my EVOO mix as a heat protectant from the sun
Moisturize Daily
Wear protective Styles ALL summer.........And that's it, pretty simple! How will you care for your hair this summer?

How to make it through that "Awkard" Length
![]() |
| Played around with Puff Options |
Over 2 years ago I started to experiment with styling my natural hair. Very intimidating as I was not accustom to styling cottony, kinky, coily hair and making it look presentable. I didn't want to walk around with a mid size tightly coiled fro all the time. So I got in the mirror and got to work! You don't have to be a "hair person" to become good at styling your hair. I put my self on a 21 day styling/wear your own hair challenge(because I would retreat under wigs or braids when I became frustrated) And let me tell you, most of those styling days were a Bust!! ....It hurts me to show you some of these "fails" but here goes...... I couldn't even do a simple twist out?! (I have plenty of failed styles to share, but there is not enough room on this page for that : ) So I'm sharing some of my attempts at the twist out.
![]() |
| aaaaah...My failed Twist outs |
Twist outs seem to be the easiest style for a newly natural to execute, and I couldn't get it down to save my life! If it didn't look like I'd stuck my finger it a light socket, I was walking around looking like I just rolled out of bed, even though I'd spent 3 hours on my hair the night before. It was quite frustrating and I wasn't comfortable with my hair, because it wasn't how I wanted to look. But I pushed forward in my efforts to style my hair at this length and eventually it started to pay off! And it will for you too!
![]() |
| My mid-length Style |
That awkward length where your natural hair isn't considered short or long can be frustrating style- wise but you will get through it, it just takes patience to figure out what works for you and your hair. Don't give up, it will come together Trust me!!(Major tip to creating a beautiful natural hair style: Make sure your hair is fully dry before you take down your sets, if its a wash n go, keep your fingers out of your hair. This will minimize frizz and keep your definition) To learn more about my journey and how I learned to "work it out" Follow me here at http://public.fotki.com/chawthorne/ Until Next time!

My 8 week Mini Twist Challenge
Well it is time for another mini twist break!! You guys know I love mini twists but lately I haven't been able to commit to the style for longer than 2 weeks. That will not work if I plan to see a significant jump in the health of my hair. But thankfully, I know that if I place my self on a challenge I have a better chance of making it. I've decided that I want to "guarantee" another inch of uninterrupted growth going into the new year because I plan to flat iron my hair for the first time in over two years, and will do a length check. (Excited!) Okay SO...This twist challenge will take me into the New Year. My hair thrives in protective styles, styles where there is very little manipulation,NO detangling, and No knots to deal with.
So here is what I am doing......
First Set 11/17/12 Cleansed and Deep Conditioned with Aubrey Organics GPB for strengthinging.. Moisturized, used IC Polisher heat protectant and Blew hair out using the tension method.. I blow my hair out on medium heat with cool shots. I like doing this because it keeps my roots stretched for clean parting. (no snags or cross chairs getting pulled into neighboring twists. If the parts aren't clean I end up with cross hairs that could break later with handling). Also I don't blow my hair out bone dry I like to leave some moisture for manageability and to keep it from drying out too much as I twist.
![]() |
| Blow out |
I will be wearing my twist up 98% of the time, moisturizing daily, doing scalp massages every other day, and sealing my ends with Black Jamaican Castor oil. I also use Hydratherma Natural's Follicle Invigorator on my scalp and edges to keep them strong. My styling will stay pretty simple: buns, updo's and rodded twist styles..(I do not wash my hair while wearing mini-twists, I just keep my scalp clean..washing adds to a tangly take down for me). I do plan to do hot oil treatments with Organic Coconut oil, and Extra Virgin Olive oil. This will keep my hair soft and conditioned.
This first set will come down on 12/8/12. I will wear a twist out for 2 days.. Detangle, Cleanse with Mud Wash, Henna, Deep Condition with Aubrey Organcis HoneySuckle Rose..Stretch, blow out and Retwist for another 4 weeks! How will you protect your hair this winter?

Trader Joe's Comes to North Dallas!
I'm Officially In love with Trader Joe's!!
![]() |
| Conditioners, Shampoos, Jojoba oil |
Yaaaay! Sept 7th Trader Joe's made it's arrival in North Dallas! Let me tell you, I have been hearing about Trader Joe's since I began my natural hair journey 4 years ago. I use to watch youtube videos with all these women raving over Trader Joe's conditioner. I was dying to try this "new" brand of conditioner only to find out that it was not just a brand of conditioner but an entire organic food store! And there was not ONE anywhere in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.. But, thankfully I had a friend whose mother cared enough to send her care packages from Atlanta, GA, she gave me three bottles and oh my gosh I was hooked! But the only problem was, once they were gone, that was it! So when I got the news that we were getting a Trader Joe's, not just one but three, I was like WOW I could not wait...So needless to say I was there on opening Day!
![]() |
| My 3rd Trip! : ) |
Trader Joe's hasn't been here a week and I've already been 3 Times. I know it's kind of crazy but I can;t help it! They are so inexpensive I couldn't believe the prices for their produce and all of their organic food. We are not use to getting this kind of food for such great prices. I've been turning all of my family and friends on to Trader Joe's and they love it too! My hair, my stomach, and my pocket book is very pleased.

Natural Hair Care Products: Are there too many to choose from?
I've noticed with the rapid increase in our women returning to their natural roots. The selection of Natural hair care products available are also increasing at an overwhelming rate. When I began my natural hair journey, I only knew of a few natural hair care products on the market. Carol's Daughter, Black Earth Products by Taalijah Waajid , and Raw African Shea Butter! But these days choosing a natural hair product may not be that simple. They all seem to promise everything that we want. Moisture, curl definition, stretch, slip, softness, and shine!
So, how do we decide what to buy without breaking the bank and earning the infamous title of Product Junkie? Below are some things I've tried to keep me in check when deciding to purchase Natural Hair Care products.
1. Assess what your primary hair care needs are, and start purchasing your products accordingly: try not to move on to anything extra until you satisfy what's most important. For example, If you are having issues with keeping your hair moisturized and you've yet to find a product to give your hair what it needs in this area; then keep your focus on finding the product or ingredients that will give you exactly what you need. Try to resist purchasing 3 or 4 curl definers or detangling leave in conditioners if you've already found one that works well for your hair. (Exception: UNLESS, you find room for improvement in one of the areas below.
2. Decide how you want to receive your products: There are a ton of wonderful products out there that work. Some are local and most of them are available for online purchase only depending on where you live. For some of us, purchasing online to get what we want is not a problem, and for others we want to walk into a local retain shop and grab what we want when we want. If you know you are not one of those who will continue to order products on line, pay expensive shipping charges, and wait 7 business days to get it, why get sucked in? Seriously! This is a hard lesson, I had to learn it, so I could share it with you. Be real with your self. If purchasing your hair products online for the rest of your life doesn't bother you then, do so.. But if you are a local person, look for what you need on the ground. This can save you a lot of money.
3. Decide how much you want to spend on your products long term. Lets be real, there are some natural products out here that are insanely expensive. I'm talking 48.00 for an 8 oz jar of conditioner! Now for me I know I have too much hair to spend that much on a jar of conditioner. I typically go through an 8 oz jar in two sessions! I know we can get curious about how some things will work on our hair, but if you know this is not an expense that you will want to continue why start? Try purchasing your products in a price range that make sense to you, and that you are willing to keep up.
These are my 3 tips for purchasing natural hair care products the smart way, what's yours?

Hair Growth Oils: My top 3 picks!
Hello Natural beauties!
As many of you know, when it comes to Natural Oils, there is no shortage of oils to choose from. There are so many wonderful oils with needful properties
that it can be difficult to settle on a few staples, because they all have
something we want! Also scientific research has shown that certain oils in
particular are superior when it comes to scalp and hair health. Whether your primary goal is to have a healthy
scalp, nourished strands, or to stimulate more growth, you can rest assure there’s a natural oil out there that can help you achieve your goal! During my healthy hair journey I have used a LOT of oils, and one day I will take time to blog about the benefits of each, But today I want to share a few of my
front runners!
Extra Virgin Olive
oil
I personally use this oil every single day! One of the best advantages of using this
oil is it acts as an antioxidant in that it helps cure hair loss. Olive oil
actually fights off harmful hormones that cause hair loss. Olive oil is also an excellent hair
conditioner, and perfect for hot oil treatments. It also seals in moisture
well. I also use Olive oil to add shine to my hair; hands down it is the only
oil that has been able to give my hair the shine I want. | Hair sealed with Extra Virgin Olive Oil |
Vatika Oil
Vatika Oil is Coconut oil that has been infused with Lemon,
Amla, Henna, and 5 other essential herbs! Vatika has been coined by some as coconut oil on steroids! I can
understand why some would say that. The benefits of Henna coats and protects
the strands, Amla strengthens the roots of your hair, and maintains the color,
while the lemon acts as an astringent for your scalp. I often massage my scalp
with this oil because it helps with “itchy
scalp” and dandruff that you can experience, especially when wearing long
term protective styles. I also pre-poo
with Vatika oil, the coconut oil allows
for a deeper penetration into the hair shaft carrying with it the other 8 herbs
that infused into its base! I absolutely
love this oil and it remains as my staple.
Sesa Oil
This oil is a powerful weapon for stimulating hair growth
and it really nourishes your hair at the same time. Sesa oil contains over 20 Ayurvedic herbs! The
first ingredient is Bhringraj, an herb that derives from an Eclipta Alba plant
used in Ayurvedic medicines, and especially for men experiencing male pattern
baldness. (Now, that is what really got my attention). I use this to massage my
scalp, and to nourish my hair, it helps to protect my hair and aids in length
retention. You can also use it as a hot oil treatment... I love how soft my hair
feels after treating it with Sesa oil!
So, these are my top three picks, what are your favorite
healthy hair oils?

I Chose to Color My Natural Hair
Hello Healthy Hair enthusiast! As promised I am back with more information on coloring natural hair. Now that we know all of our options for coloring. I wanted to get a few natural women from my intimate circle to share their experiences with hair color! I love researching via textbooks and getting all my "scientific facts" etc... But there's no better way to learn what than by taking notes from real life experiences. I will be doing a few of these interviews for a more well rounded outlook on the coloring experience. So! With that being said, This week, I want you to MEET SIMONE! Simone has been natural her entire life, but just recently embraced her natural texture a little over 2 years ago. Here's what she has to say about her experience with Permanent Hair Color..
Simone, Why did you choose to color your Natural hair?
Will you color your hair again?
I do not think I will color my hair any time soon. I got my little fill of it and I am letting my hair grow out, while keeping the colored ends. Also, If I do decide to color again, I believe I would choose highlights instead of coloring my entire head, and I would also have it professionally done.
Well, Thank you Ms Simone for your input! We appreciate you sharing your color story, your hair and the color is Very beautiful!
Ok, that's it for color on this week ladies! Check back next week where I will be highlighting a naturalista who uses demi permanents as her hair color of choice..
Until Next Time!!
I chose to color my hair because I wanted to try something new. It seemed like my dark hair color made me look a little pale at times. I also wanted to enhance my dark brown eye color more. They always looked black because of my hair.
What kind of color did you use?
I used dark & lovely sun kissed brown. It was a golden color. I previously tried using a semi permanent, but it was barely noticeable, so I chose to use a permanent color. What would you say are some Cons to coloring your natural hair if any?
For me it was, how my hair felt immediately after the application. I could tell my hair was different, it felt sort of "strawy". I also couldn't do wash n' goes for a while because I didn't want the color to bleed off. Also, when I would straighten my hair it felt dry sometimes and would get that “permish” feel, it felt stiff and not as soft and moveable, but I have learned how to keep my hair moisturized and it does a lot better.
What do you love most about your hair color?
I liked the hair color more when it darkened up some. I also used henna which would brighten up the color to an orange-reddish color. I liked that a lot. When my hair grew out a lot, it looked cool when I did different styles and I had different colors going on, almost looked like highlights.

What advice would give to other naturals looking to add a permanent color to their hair?
If you are contemplating getting your hair colored, I would say try a test patch on the nape of your neck. Especially if you are someone who is unable to adjust to change easily. The test patch may give you a good idea of what it will look like before making a full commitment. But for those who are great with change and don't mind the risk, I'd say go for it, or the thought of coloring will continue to plague you! If you know how to keep your hair healthy, it will continue to grow. Also, If your hair color comes out too bright, you can mix up some henna and Amla and apply it to your hair. (If you don’t mind the orange reddish tint). Also no matter what you do keep it moisturized! I would keep intense heat off of it the first month or two as well. Moisturizers and oils will help your hair to stay soft. But most importantly, do your research first.
Well, Thank you Ms Simone for your input! We appreciate you sharing your color story, your hair and the color is Very beautiful!

Product let Down: How to make the best of it!
(Greetings, Healthy Happy Hair care advocates! It’s been a little while since I’ve posted. (I didn’t post at all in August). We had a sudden and unexpected death in our family last month and we are just trying to stay focused. My family is living proof that God’s strength is PRESENT in weakness. Although we suffered a significant lost we are still victorious because that family member did go on to live with Jesus! So advantage, us! Alright, on to today's Natural Hair Care Tip! : )
Making your Products work for you
Have you ever purchased a product like say a Moisturizer, or Deep conditioner and wish it really lived up to its promises…you’re probably thinking how many times? We read all the hyped up reviews, watch endless you tube product reviews on how great it is, only to learn after purchasing that we are not a part of that satisfied customer club! Whether you’ve purchased a product based on your own curiosity or on the suggestion of others the let down feeling you get is still the same, this cycle can lead to a lot of frustration and loads of wasted money.
![]() |
| (My friends) All of us have different hair textures and & our product selection varies |
Natural hair has infinite personalities and differs from person to person. This is why experiences with products can differ from person to person; it doesn’t always mean that it is a bad product. Instead of trashing the product or giving it away, try tweaking it first to fit your individual needs. In most cases, if it’s an all natural product, anything that you add (that is all natural) should not cause any harmful effects. Of course, use your best judgment based on known allergies, etc. (Just because something is organic, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have an allergic reaction. I know people who are allergic to Peppermint oil and Jojoba oil!?) But I have found these cases to be rare.
So here we go!
Moisturizers that aren’t moisturizing enough: Try adding glycerin and coconut oil to your mix. Vegetable glycerin is always a winner in the moisturizing department and Coconut oil will help carry moisture deeper into the hair shaft.
Deep Conditioners without slip or moisture: Some conditioners can be so thick that it’s hard to distribute throughout the hair. Try adding Extra Virgin Olive Oil, it gives amazing slip and it adds extra shine! For added moisture mix in Glycerin and or Honey!
Hair butters and Moisturizers that are too thick: Maybe you have fine strands, and the product you purchased is just way to heavy, try diluting the product with a little Aloe Vera Gel! Aloe Vera is moisturizing and it helps maintain a proper Ph-balance in the hair. The gel will also help give your Hair butter more of a souffle or whipped feel.
Shampoos that are too harsh: Maybe you purchased what you thought was an all natural shampoo and learned that it had sulfates or is still really drying. You can soften your shampoos by adding: Water, Aloe Vera, Vegetable or Seed Oil.
These are just a few tips that you can use to make the best of your investment! You may feel you should not have to add anything to a product that you’ve spent good money on, but it’s better than letting it grow fungus underneath your bathroom sink, or throwing it away? Worse case it still doesn’t work and you know not to purchase it again! But, at least you’ve tried to make it work for you.
I always add ingredients like Aloe Vera, Glycerin, and EVOO to my favorite products to give them an extra Kick!! So this can work both ways. I’ve found that individual hair textures, porosity levels, and technique has a lot to do with how our products behave in our hair. Our job is to learn our hair, and then find a perfect balance when it comes to our products.
Until Next time keep it Healthy and Happy!!

Cassia Obovata: Herbal Wonder
Cassia Obovata: Makes Hair Stronger, Fuller, Healthier
![]() |
| Post Cassa & Amla Treatment Cassia Powder Please Contact Me at healthyhpyhair@gmail.com or 817-504-9321 if you are interested in this Natural Hair Treatment for yourself! Cassia Obovata It is derived from a flowering desert plant, also known as "senna." It has been referred to as neutral henna; however, cassia is not true henna. Cassia does not typically add color to the hair. Like henna, Cassia Obovata strengthens the hair shaft, improves overall health, and adds lots of shine. Cassia Obovata will make damaged hair silky thick, and lustrous. It will also keep your scalp healthy, improving dandruff. I typically will do a Cassia and Amla treatment once a month. For me, when I neglect to do this treatment my hair can tell! Cassia, like Henna deposits a coating on the hair strand which coats the hair cuticle making it smoother, fuller, and stronger. Hair that is chemically processed, or naturally curly/kinky can greatly benefit from Herbal hair treatments like Cassia, because these hair types are more prone to breakage. Colored Treated ![]() Natural Kinky-Curly Hair By adding Cassia Obovata to my monthly hair regimen, I give my hair and advantage in growth retention in that, my hair is more resistant to breakage and excessive shedding. Also with Amla as an added benefit it creates a healthier scalp for my hair to grow out of! It also defines my hair's natural texture keeping it Thick, Healthy, and Strong! Pinned Sides Pony Puff Cassia Obovata treatments should be applied every 3 to 4 weeks to enjoy the maximum benefits. |
